Quote of the day, from Vanina Bilous [my translation]: A couple - TopicsExpress

Quote of the day, from Vanina Bilous [my translation]: A couple arent two halves of an orange.* They are two oranges in a fruit bowl. Unless there are two complete people there; two people, each of them vibrant and alive, there is no couple. *Note that in Spanish the expression media naranja is roughly equivalent to soulmate in English, so this is a very natural metaphor to choose. Vaninas larger point is a slightly different one (see link below). But I think this is an important idea and often misunderstood in tango: the idea that self-expression, especially for followers, will somehow damage your connection with your partner. For me, the exact opposite is true. Yes, in tango, you need to learn to express the music in ways which feel comfortable for the other person, which they can enjoy and preferably also respond to. But you cannot connect to someone who is not fully there. Its not a real conversation if the other person only gives you the answers they think you want to hear, if they dont let you know their point of view and how they feel about things. If you really want to dance *with* someone, you need to communicate to them how you hear the music, how you feel the movement, how you embrace, who you are as a dancer.
