RAAF Richmond, NSW, circa Feb 1983 The good ol’ Hercs! A couple of weeks ago I was reminiscing about flying around the world in the back of a Herc in 1982 - but in 1983 I was living with them. ALL OF THEM! A coincidental gap in the C130 servicing and deployment schedules meant that all 24 RAAF Hercules (36 and 37 SQNs) were available for flight on the same day. The attached photos show the congestion on the tarmac and taxi-ways in order to get them all airborne. There were tail fins and propellers everywhere - and the place was saturated with exhaust fumes. However there was one aircraft missing, because it was called out for a medivac (or SAR) earlier in the day.
