RACING OLYMPIC 4 WEEKS BEFORE HALF IRONMAN? -MEMBER QUESTION; A member emailed this: Im following your free training schedule for the half Ironman and I am on week 12. what do you think about doing an intermediate distance tri on the weekend of week seventeen? Ive done 3 sprints so far in training. All is going well but I just dont want to get hurt before the race. Thanks. -MY ANSWER: Per the half Ironman training schedule at beginnertriathlete/discussion/training/training-plans-view.asp?planid=16, you should definitely have the volume to handle an Olympic triathlon. I would go for the race on week 17 of your training plan - but just keep it easy since its close to the HIM race...just a training day...dont try to go fast. I would also move around and get rid of training leading up to that weekend and a few days after the race that equals the race distance. Specifically, on week 17, move Saturdays bike and swim to Thursday and keep the swim to 30 minutes and the bike to 45 - though keep these workouts easy. This way you have Friday and Saturday off to prepare and rest for the race on Sunday. AFTER THE RACE: Per the plan you have Monday off which is good. Do the swim and bike as planned on Tuesday - but keep them easy or even shorten them if you are sore. The rest of the week follow the plan as normal.
