RIP MAGAZINE: On this day in 1986, the charitable side-project known as HEAR N AID released a compilation album that included the hit single STARS. The effort was conceptualized by Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain, and Vivian Campbell, all of whom believed that the hard rock & heavy metal community needed to do something to compete with the success of Band Aids Do They Know Its Christmas? and USA for Africas We Are the World. STARS was recorded on May 20 and 21 1985 at the A&M Records Studio in Hollywood, California, and included musical contributions from members of Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Queensrÿche, Blue Öyster Cult, Vanilla Fudge, Y&T, Rough Cutt, Giuffria, Journey, W.A.S.P., Night Ranger, and Spinal Tap (as well as Yngwie Malmsteen, Ted Nugent, and Tommy Aldridge). The project raised over $1 million for African famine relief & gave metalheads a track that would be cherished for years to come. \m/
