ROCKETS FIRST TEAM IN INAUGURAL SUPER LEAGUE GRAND FINAL The Rowville Rockets are the first team in the league’s history to win their way into the grand final, after a come from behind victory against rival the St Thomas More’s Spartans. The Rockets hit the lead for the first time with just over two minutes remaining in the game, thanks to Tom Melenhorst’s flurry of points; the end result 32-29. Jordan Canovan started slowly, but came up big late in the first half to keep the Rockets in the contest and had a huge second half on Ben Waterhouse forcing a second half bagel from the winner of the scoring title. Every Rocket hit the scoreboard in the team effort, but many have already written them off in the grand final regardless of the opponent due to Melenhorst’s absence. GM Greg Cocks discussed what he thought of the haters. “Well they can f*** right off. We’ve had haters throughout the entire season. Even the pre-season rankings had us in fourth spot. Tom is a huge loss, but we’ll go in confident of winning once again, as our gameplan is better than anyone else’s in the league.” Finding themselves down 8-0 early, Daniel Smith came off the bench to provide a spark scoring instantly, before Dale Crotty made a three to cut back the deficit to 3. The Spartans would once again kick away to a 9-point lead, but late points to Jordan Canovan to finish the half made it a 5-point ball game going into half-time. The second half was a dog fight, as the Rockets slowly clawed their way back until Melenhorst just took over at both ends of the floor in the final 4 minutes of play. Without Melenhorst in next week’s grand final, his shoes will be filled by Matt Smyth, surprise packet Ben Borys and the undersized hustler Daniel ‘DJ Mif’ Smith. Rowville will play the winner of the Spartans and the Olinda Bushrangers.
