The festival, which has been a public holiday since 2008, is an occasion for people to remember the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Miluo River. Paddlers across the country also take to rivers in the highly competitive dragon boat races. In Jiaxing city, Zhejiang Province, the racing tradition has a history of over 1,000 years. However, it’s not just within China that the races draw huge crowds. This year, celebrations are being held across the world.
