Rachel Naomi Remen MD at Metta Institute speaking right now about "Mystery in Medicine". Considering herself a mystic she said, "Conventionally the unknown is something to be mastered or a cause for fear. For a mystic the unknown is instead perfectly safe and can be a cause for the arising of awe and wonder. Mystery need not be special it can be perfectly ordinary" "Mystery invites our curiosity, to know more.....not necessarily in the service of a particular solution....but to expand, to open, to discover. Mystery can inspire us and comfort us." She spoke of the importance of stillness in this process and how it can support us in accompanying those in the midst of the mystery we call dying. Rachel illustrated the impact of stillness with a short poem. We can make our minds so like still water, that beings gather about us. That they may see their own images and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even fiercer life. Because of our quiet. -William Butler Yates
