Ranchers – we recently found ourselves in the midst of an intense Twitter discussion regarding how cattle are raised for meat. We posted a picture of cattle walking through the pasture – a morning shot taken while checking cattle that day. We asked other farmers and ranchers to share their pictures, too. We immediately found there was a misconception that the picture was “fluffy” and not really how cattle are raised. Rather, many thought cattle spent their entire lives eating corn in a feedlot. There are many management styles for raising beef and – in beef-producer terms – one could say they run a stocker, backgrounding, cow/calf, grass fed, etc. – beef operation. What does that mean? Share your stories of how cattle get from your farm/ranch to someone’s plate.
