Random #Hajj2014 thought: One of the constant themes of Hajj is death and the hereafter. After every prayer, the call for Janaza is made. Our Ihram represents our shrouds which we will be buried in and the great gathering is symbolic of the assembly of Allahs creation on the day of judgement. This keeps one constantly humbled and focused in Hajj and incredibly grateful when he returns home as you truly feel like youve been given life once again. Its surreal to be able to hug your family again and resume life after returning from what felt like another realm in so many ways. Imagine how different our lives would be if we thought about and talked about death more often. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to do so at an individual, family, and institutional level. As an individual, this protects you from being deluded by this world and also sacrificing your purpose and principles for the sake of it. As a family, this serves as a constant reminder that it could be any day that we are cut off from another and we cant afford to hold grudges or cut each other off. And as an institution, this protects you from losing your collective sincerity and being motivated only towards worldly gains which then strip you of baraka and integrity. Omar Ibn AbdulAzeez (ra) used to gather the people of knowledge on a daily basis for the sole purpose of reminding one another of death and the hereafter. This isnt to make us constantly depressed, but rather to cause us to long for something greater and take heed of that which is real and eternal. May Allah give us the best of this world and the next, and protect us from the punishment of the fire. Ameen
