Razor Progress. Since that first seminal moment when I became a shaver about 45 years ago, other than some spells using the family name, I have wielded Gillette razors to remove my beard. The first one was a hand-me-down from my dad, exactly the same as the one on the left. Its called a safety razor which I presumed meant that you couldnt accidentally decapitate yourself while shaving, although drawing blood was all too easy in those formative sessions in front of the bathroom mirror, lathering up with Ingram Cool before scraping away the stubble. The only claimed improvement on other blades of the time is that the blade was blue. Im not sure how that made it sharper, but you did need to change the blades quite regularly, which involved a nifty twist on the bottom of the handle, which caused the business end to open up like a flower, exposing the old blade for removal. I used to think that my chin was rendered quite smooth by such ancient technology, and that the tingle left over from the Ingram really helped set me up for the day. I reckon I could have quite happily been using the same style of razor today. But things have improved beyond blue. Yesterday, I purchased a Gillette Fusion Pro-glide Power to shave the same face that used to look back at me and my safety razor (more spottily but less wrinkly) in 1970. Theres four blades gliding over my chin, and all the while the whole thing vibrates and hums by means of a little motor, and a blue light shimmers in my vision. Its also got a micro comb and a moisturising strip. Its a bit like shaving with a mini light-sabre. And thats just the weapon that would have come in so handy to get the bloody thing out of the packaging this morning...
