Real Madrid is the most valuable sports club in the world:: Real Madrid is the most valuable sports club in the world after overtaking last year’s number one Manchester United, Forbes has revealed. The member-owned Spanish powerhouse is valued at US$3.3 billion, owning the highest revenues in sport with some of the most lucrative sponsorship deals. Malcolm Glazer’s Manchester United ($3.165 billion) and another community-owned football club in Barcelona ($2.6 billion) round out the top three, while 30 NFL franchises feature in the list. The fifth-ranked Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL club worth over $2 billion due to $200 million worth of sponsorships and stadium revenues, while the Green Bay Packers, the only shareholder-owned NFL franchise, are the 18th most valuable club, worth $1.161 billion. Despite their sports being central to the United States, the richest MLB, NFL and NBA sides such as the New York Yankees (fourth, $2.3 billion) and the New England Patriots (sixth, $1.635 billion) owe their financial success to television deals, sponsorships and ticket prices. There are more than 60,000 people on the waiting list for Patriots season tickets, while Time Warner Cable spent big on the Los Angeles Dodgers (seventh, $1.615 billion) and the Los Angeles Lakers (31st, $1 billion) with 25-year television deals worth $8.5 billion and $5 billion respectively. Perennial NFL under-performers Cleveland Browns are the first on the list to be valued under $1 billion, ranked 34th at $987 million. Ferrari, 21st at $1.15 billion, and McLaren, 47th at $800 million, are the only Formula One teams on the list, while the Toronto Maple Leafs are the sole NHL team, ranked 31st at $1 billion. The average value of the top 50 increased 16 per cent on 2012’s list, highlighted by Real Madrid’s $1.42 billion increase, Barcelona’s $1.29 billion rise and Manchester United’s $935 million jump.
