Really upsetting interview on MTP with Dick Cheney this morning. Chuck Todd asked about a detainee who was chained to a wall, doused with water and frozen to death, and later found to be completely innocent. Todd asked him what should be done about that, and Cheney said Im more concerned with bad guys who got out and were released than I am with a few, uh, that, uh, in fact, were innocent. (I include the uhs in his quote because even Cheney has, somewhere inside him, hesitation about torturing innocent people to death, though he showed absolutely no remorse in this interview, quite the opposite). Among the things I thought when I heard that was that this country of laws has founding documents in which the idea that one is innocent until proven guilty is paramount, exactly because people were tortured and imprisoned with no trial. Also, Im frustrated that much of the dialogue about torture centers around the idea that it is valid whether or not it worked. Whether it worked or not is totally irrelevant. If it worked to kill detainees children in front of their faces, should we do that? If it worked to publicly hang their mothers, should we do that? Even entertaining the notion of whether or not torture works just takes us further down this hideous moral road that we are already way, way too far down.
