Received a nice letter this morning: Dear Hannes, Well, at last I am able to give you news on your beautiful lion. As you know it has been nearly 3 years since I painted him and there has been a series of hold ups with the final sale of him. Finally, a Foundation was opened by a young mother, Di Crossman, whose young daughter was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis last year. This little girl is still very ill as they try to stabilize her disease and during her many stays in hospital Di Crossman saw the need for help and support to many other children suffering from this awful disease. That is why she opened the Foundation and works tirelessly to raise funds. A family in Perth, Australia, put in an online bid of AU$4500.00 (approximately R43,000.00) which was accepted by the Foundation and the lion was sent over to Perth last week. I attach a photo of his final resting place which the owners sent me. I have received an email from the Kids with Arthritis Foundation telling me that the first child has already benefitted from this donation. I will copy and paste their message: As regards the donation, we have already been asked to supply a Soweto child, who has severe arthritis, with a wheelchair. She is 16, and during her worst flare-ups her grandmother carries her on her back. This is just one child for whom your very kind donation will make a life-changing difference. Many thanks! So, Hannes, even though it has taken a while, the reason for which he was painted is finally becoming a reality. I will keep you posted on how the rest of the money is distributed and which children around the country are benefitting. Thank you again for allowing me to use your beautiful photo for the painting. Kind regards. Heather Thistleton
