Recently I came across a book titled Thundergod - The Ascendance of Indra, written by Rajiv G Menon. This is the latest addition towards the so-called epic fantasy literature in India i.e. retelling of old myths/religious stories. While I strongly suspect that this trend has something to with the pathetic excuse of the books collectively titled The Shiva trilogy, that is not the main point here. The author has shamelessly lifted plot-lines from many a epic fantasy/fantasy movies/books/graphic novels ranging from LOTR to 300. For instance, there is fight scene in the book where a bunch of guys fight another bunch. The geographical location, the incidents before the fight, are almost similar to 300. The only difference being the number of fighters. There are only 50 people fighting instead of 300. I have two doubts. One,Whether these things could be called epic fantasy? ( Tolkien must be turning in his grave). The publishers are supposed to have an editor, right? If so, what the hell s/he was thinking before accepting this crap for publication?
