Recently this video of Reza Aslan on CNN addressing bigotry and misleading generalisations by US news has gone viral. The video exposes two very important points: 1) Islamophobia, ignorant judgement, selective use of information, and cognitive dissonance (all in the context of mass media) have been used rampantly in order to exploit and institutionalise a misleading, hatred-inciting, scaremongering, and violent attitude towards a group of people- much like what was done by Hitler in the 1930s. Yet every one of these allegations can be refuted easily by use of simple and objective facts. Reality stands in favour of Muslims, as it would stand in favour of any other people subjugated to such gross generalisations for the purpose of vilification. It is only the twisted political agenda of few that seem to evoke extreme views in the masses; Islamophobia, not Islam, is the extremism. 2) The standard of journalism in the US is painstakingly low, to the point where it is quite frightening. To have two anchors on a global-reaching news outlet whom are unable to retain basic information for more than five seconds, constantly regurgitate the same (already addressed) nonsense, litter questions soaked with bias, and take no account of fundamental communication skills (e.g. listening, basic comprehension, trying to withhold relentless unprofessional interruptions) is an embarrassment. I recommend everyone watches and shares this clip. Reza Aslan did a marvelous job in putting some much-needed facts out there, while maintaining his calm of character and relying on an uncontroversial evidence as well as a sound version of reality.
