Reconciliation. The UK / FIG seem to celebrate or mark with ceremony liberation day on 14th June. Argentina seems to celebrate or mark with ceremony invasion day on 2nd April. Both sides and the Islanders had people killed in the conflict and I am sure I am right when I say that more British and Argentine military personnel have committed suicide since 1982 than were killed in the war whilst the Islanders live with the consequences and impact of the invasion and occupation today. I know that some offers of joint UK – Argentine memorial services (not celebrations) of the war have been proposed in the past but I don’t know if any have happened at the official level. Would such ceremonies – marking the dead and wounded, those who have died since the war by their own hand, not a triumphal celebration of one sides victory and the others defeat – be useful or conducive for reconciliation? The previous enemies of World War Two and other conflicts have joint ceremonies but generally the issues which brought those nations to fight have usually been resolved. This is not the case in the Falklands issue but would that be a barrier to joint memorials?
