Red Rock fire burning actively near Hallelujah Junction THe Red ROck Fire near Hallelujah Junction has burned 5,400 acres since starting yesterday afternoon. UPDATE: 12:15 p.m. July 2, 2013 — The vegetation fire that started at approximately 1:25 p.m. Monday, July 1 six miles north of Hallelujah Junction and 45 miles northwest of Reno has burned 5,400 acres and is 35 percent contained. The fire is burning on steep and rocky terrain and using sagebrush and Pinyon/Juniper grass as fuel. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center Public Information Officer Elayn Briggs said the agency expects full containment of the fire by Thursday, July 4. She said no structures are currently threatened and no evacuations or road closures have been ordered at this time. However, since extreme fire behavior conditions currently exist, structure protection is in place. According to its website, sierrafront.net, a power line and cell tower are involved in the fire, and “the fire is threatening priority sage grouse habitat, Native American cultural resources and cattle grazing allotments.” Resources assigned to the Red Rock Fire include three air tankers, three helicopters, five hand crews, 10 fire engines, three water tenders, three dozers, eight command staff and 300 fire personnel. 8:00 a.m. July 2, 2013 — The National Interagency Coordination Center reports the Red Rock Fire, burning near Highway 395 about 40 miles southeast of Susanville, remains an active fire burning in brush and structures are threatened. The fire has blackened about 1,500 acres and containment is expected Wednesday, July 3. A total of nine crews, six engines, three helicopters and 226 total personnel are working the fire, according to the coordination center. The Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol reports Highway 395 is now open with no restrictions.
