Redskins depth chart help wanted: Defense The Redskins are going in to offseason workouts today with 72 players on the roster. Between now and the start of OTAs in May they will add 18 more to get up to the 90 player limit. Now is a good time to see how many players they have at each position and compare it to the norm for going in to OTAs and training camp so we have an idea of where the Redskins need to add players via the draft, undrafted free agency and veteran free agency. Yesterday, we looked at the offense. Today, it’s the defense. Starters underlined Defensive line On roster (10): Jason Hatcher, Jarvis Jenkins, Barry Cofield, Kedric Golston, Chris Baker, Stephen Bowen, Clifton Geathers, Doug Worthington, Brandon Moore, Chris Neild Need for camp—11: With Bowen unlikely to participate in anything prior to training camp they might bring in an extra end to fill in the rotation so they might e looking for two undrafted guys here. Outside linebacker On roster (6): Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan, Rob Jackson, Brandon Jenkins, Gabe Miller, Adrian Robinson Need for camp—7: As we noted yesterday, the Redskins could decide to bring in another player here who has a legitimate shot at making the roster. A late draft pick here would not be surprising, especially if it’s someone who could be a strong special teams contributor. Inside linebacker On roster (7): Perry Riley, Akeem Jordan, Keenan Robinson, Adam Hayward, Darryl Sharpton, Will Compton, Jeremy Kimbrough Need for camp—8: Jordan as the starter here is just a guess at the moment; Robinson could have something to say about that by the time the season opener rolls around. They have signed three free agents here in Hayward, Jordan, and Sharpton so anyone else added like likely to be a camp body. Cornerback On roster (7): DeAngelo Hall, David Amerson, Tracy Porter, E. J. Biggers, Richard Crawford, Chase Minnifield, Peyton Thompson Need for camp—8: Although the Redskins could go into the season with the group the have, they could go for an upgrade in the draft. Safety On roster (6): Brandon Meriweather, Ryan Clark, Bacarri Rambo, Phillip Thomas, Jose Gumbs, Trenton Robinson Need for camp—7: It would not be surprising to see the Redskins take a safety fairly early and see him push for playing time this year and a starting job next year. Specialists (5): K Kai Forbath, Jake Rogers; P Robert Malone; LS Nick Sundberg, Kyle Nelson Need for camp—4: Nelson will stay on the roster until Sundberg gets full medical clearance after rehabbing his knee. It looks like Forbath and Rogers will battle it out during OTAs and minicamp and perhaps through August.
