Referendum 1: The Government Have Failed Us By Endure Onun & Senator Etim John Joet. 9th July, 2014 • A genuine answer to the question: Why do men accept government? proves that the government of Nigeria have failed us. • During the brief period between the collapse of the Biafran authority and the re-establishment of the federal authority, the unarmed (civilian) population lived in fear and insecurity. They were not sure of their lives and they had no right to their properties. That means their lives and properties could be taken away by anybody stronger than they. • Moreover, certain basic amenities and services which they could not provide as individuals but which they enjoyed as a group were no longer accessible. Such things as health services, schools, road maintenance, water supplies and electricity were no longer available to them during the unsettled period. • Hence, they were ready to accept the federal authority provided that they were guaranteed the security of their lives and properties and the enjoyment of some basic necessities of life. • From this brief account, it follows that men accept government as a necessity for peaceful existence, good and cheap health services, well equipped schools, good roads, steady water supply and regular electricity. • Anything short of these would mean that the citizens having surrendered their freedom are being cheated by the government who have failed to meet their bargain. • Yes! The government have failed to meet their bargain. They are not doing their own quota of the deal. • No security in Nigeria, we are all living in fear and panic. Bombs go off and no body knows who the culprits are. All what the security agencies can say is suspected members of the Boko Haram sect. They are all functioning in suspect. Communal clashes everywhere, no technical measures to end them. No government official is held responsible for any lose of life and property. Over 263 girls were abducted in Chibok LGA of Borno state but the Chief Security Officer (LG Chairman) has not answered any question. • Poor health services and as a result, citizens fly abroad for medication. About 94% of Nigeria icons die of ill health; Yaradua, Dora Akunyili, Ojukwu, Babatunde, Oputa, Sam Loco, Dantata etal. Poor but expensive health colleges, health departments and health centres. • Money is the tectonic tag of education. When was the last time the federal government gave bursaries to students? 100 years after amalgamation, yet admission into either state or federal universities is still determined by state of origin. People pay huge sums of money to secure admission and after they have it, they still pay money to accept it: In UNICAL, the admission acceptance fee is now N10,000 aside school charges. • Electricity does not run through our cables for more than 3 hours but the bill is 9-11 thousand per month. The worst I have ever seen is PhEd (Portharcout Electricity Distribution) company. They said it is estimated bills; even if you dont have light for 3 weeks, your monthly bill remains the same. • Water board is not consistent. • No good roads to ride home of. • So many transformation agenda; the farmers, the taxi drivers, the less privileged, the physically challenged are not excluded Not even the market women who pay tax everyday benefit from the government. • What can the government boast of; Security? Peace? Good education? Good roads? Steady electricity? Good health centres? What? Nothing! The government have failed us and I think the earlier we start looking for an alternative, the better. Let our conscience judge us!
