Reflecting on my development as a coach the thing that comes to - TopicsExpress

Reflecting on my development as a coach the thing that comes to mind are the great mentors I have had. The name that stands out the most to me is the great Jim Bush. Coach Bush was the head Track and Field coach at UCLA for many years and led the Bruins to several NCAA championships. He also coached multiple national and world record holders. As an athlete I knew what my contribution to the team was and what it meant to be a Bruin at UCLA. Coach Bush taught me something that I have carried over into my coaching career. Before every competition we had a team dinner. At this dinner coach would talk about the quality of the opposing program. Always complimenting them and praising the tradition of that program. He would then go down the list of EACH member of our team and discuss what our individual role in the meet would be. Coach Bush presented a PLAN for each of us. We knew exactly what we needed to do for our team to be effective. Whether you were the top athlete or the guy barely making the squad he made EVERYONE feel valuable. I always knew the importance of what I had to do as an athlete for my team. I appreciate Jim Bush for teaching me this because it carries over into normal life. Each one of us plays an important role in the world. No matter how big or small. Our contribution to our families, relationships, work and teams is significant. Know your role in the world and set a positive example for others. Working together as a team we can make an amazing difference in the world. I thank Coach Bush for being a great role model and mentor for me. It is my goal to continue his positive legacy through my coaching and example to my community. Great leaders pass the baton of success on to others. Cheers to Coach Jim Bush!
