Remaining Stagnant in the East This Weekend; Becoming More Active Next Week Finally, there is a flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. Although the dry and stagnant conditions will continue this weekend, the pattern will slowly become more active next week. The details remain uncertain, and whether the anticipated wetter regime will persist long enough to be any sort of drought-buster is not clear. Still, almost any weather change will be welcome. In the mean time, the calm weather looks to continue for the next several days, as a ridge of high pressure remains firmly entrenched over the Northwest. The largest concerns are still going to be poor air quality, as well as low clouds and fog in the lowlands. Subtle changes commence on Monday, as a back door cold front brushes eastern Washington, and brings a breath of fresh air into the region. This may break, or at least weaken, the seemingly omnipresent eastside inversion. A disturbance will then bring light rain to western Washington on Tuesday, but it will be sheared apart as it encounters the ridge. Still, the dying storm will weaken the stubborn high pressure area, and could serve as an important primer in advance of the potentially more robust systems that could arrive late in the period and beyond. Once the path has been cleared for a more progressive pattern, the ridge is not expected to rebuild over the Northwest in the foreseeable future. Temperatures will generally remain somewhat steady this weekend, but should warm in the lowlands as winds increase next week. The mountains and coast could be quite mild into early next week, but cooling should arrive later in the week. By next weekend, a cooler and unsettled pattern may setup over the entire state.
