Remember When Paula Deen Shot Trayvon? Yeah, me neither but what’s that matter to Hollywood? ‘Law & Order SVU’ is tackling racial profiling head on in an upcoming episode that winds together the controversial Trayvon Martin case and the Paula Deen scandal. In the episode, Cybill Shepard plays Jolene Castille, a famous southern chef. But instead of making a racial slur, like Deen, she guns down an unarmed, hoodie-wearing black teen she thought was following her on the Upper West Side, mirroring the Trayvon Martin slaying. According to TV Guide, Castille claims she killed the teen in an act of self-defense because she knew police were chasing a rapist of the same description. Some might laugh at the absurdity but there are others, so-called low information types who have all the time in the world to text and tweet each other but no time to pay attention to what really goes on who will watch this and believe it really happened that way. Think of how many people actually believe it was Sarah Palin who said that she could see Russia from her porch and not Tina Fey performing a comedy skit on SNL. A lifetime of exposure to pop-culture has rendered an entire generation unable to discern fantasy from reality. And those who can differentiate, choose fantasy regardless because it seems more ‘real’ than reality itself, at least in their minds. I suppose in another ten years everyone will know for a fact that little 8 yr. old Trayvon was skipping down the road licking a lollipop when the big bad wolf Zimmerman shot him in the back.
