Remembering Suzanne Rochon-Burnett today, eight years since her passing at the age of 71. She was married to Gordon Burnett, owner of 1470 CHOW in Welland, Ont., when I started my radio career there in 1980 (I left in 1986). Suzanne later bought his share of the station, received an FM license and renamed it Spirit 91.7. Its now a classic rock station known as Giant FM. Suzanne was named to both the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada, was the first aboriginal person in Canada to own a private radio station, and the first woman inducted into the Canadian Aboriginal Business Hall of Fame. A remarkable spirit herself! (Pic taken in 1983 when the annual CHOW Fan Fair moved from the station property to the Niagara Regional Fairgrounds.
