Report Reveals Feds Mobile Security Gaps Federal Computer Week (VA) (01/14/14) Konkel, Frank Federal employees are more lax with mobile devices than they are with desktop computers, suggests a report from Mobile Work Exchange. The survey of government employees in late 2013 reveals that 86 percent of participants lock their desktop computers when away from them, 86 percent have a safe alternative workplace, and 78 percent always store files in secure locations. However, 31 percent said they used public Wi-Fi and only 25 percent used passwords on mobile devices for work, and 6 percent with a mobile phone for work said they have lost or misplaced their device. Extended over the size of a typical federal agency, such behavior adds 3,500 additional risks of security breaches. Also, more than 25 percent said they did not receive mobile security training. The report concludes that only 11 percent of government workers are practicing safety, while 48 percent have low-risk habits to correct. Unfortunately, 41 percent are putting themselves and their agencies at risk.
