Residents Deal with Third Sewer Backup SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) — Folks across the Pioneer Valley spent much of their time cleaning up after last night’s flooding rains. For those on Church St. in Springfield, it’s an ongoing issue that they’ve had enough of. Eduardo Arroyo has called Church St. home for 25 years. Yesterday, he measured three inches of water in his basement. It’s the third time this has happened in months. “We try to get our stuff organized and put our stuff back here, and the next day you come down…it’s all full of water! This is the third time its happened. I think somebody needs to do something about this,” said Arroyo. When it downpours, the sewer pipe overflows. It leaves mud and water in several homes on the street. “I’m very inconvenienced because I have an 8-year-old with asthma and I can’t use my central air. I can’t replace everything that keeps getting lost,” said resident Derrick Brown. Residents are also concerned about their safety. “We’re also kind of scared because it’s not only water. It’s sewage water. Contamination, bacteria, all of that in the basement…the smell,” said resident Alex Gonzalez. As to why this keeps happening over and over again… “I would say that it was probably a heavy rain event each time it occurred. We do in our rules and regulations document recommend that people avoid having bathrooms in their basement. I assume all of these residents did have basement fixtures,” said Joyce Mulvaney from Springfield Water and Sewer Commission. The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is looking into the complaints they’ve received from residents. They plan to hold an investigation as to whether or not the problem is an issue underground.
