Returning from our 3 week camp in Hintertux and this years summer - TopicsExpress

Returning from our 3 week camp in Hintertux and this years summer training period is over. During the summer season we did a total of 46 days on skis between May 11th and October 22nd, 32 days on Hintertux Glacier, and 14 days indoors in Lithuania. Overall we were able to to train according to plan, though some rough weather caused a bit of problems in May and in the middle of October. As always at this time of the year, the autumn starts to feel long and everyone is anxious to see snow fall and the racing season to start. Even though the FIS World Cup started two weeks ago, the regular FIS calendar only starts in the last days of November or start of December. Our training in the summer has started with equipment testing and basic training on skis and dry land, and ramping up towards October into a more racing oriented mind set. The last camp had a rough start with the athletes having to have a sleep-over in Berlin due to technical difficulties with the aeroplane. As a consolation though, we heard that the conditions on the glacier were unskiable on the day we missed. During the first 4 days we were able to ski in great conditions, icy hard slope and a great lane on number 2. We pushed through 4 full days of 20 runs each before taking a day for rest and recovery. After the great first days the weather turned a bit sour, but we were making do: skiing mostly slalom in very tough conditions. The boys especially got to try out their skills as we trained two days with the Austrian Europa Cup team on slalom. The course was wearing down on soft snow, on full 50 second course of steep slalom, and you could see that it was tough technically and physically. For Nella this was real shock treatment for the tough conditions on which World Cup level skiing is done. After wearing out the fog and storm the skies cleared again. The forecast showed very warm weather, but the slope ended up being rock hard, and the last 4 days were spent on very fast snow and speedy GS skiing. Sadly Nella got the flue and missed the last days. She tried coming up when feeling better on the morning of the 4th day, but the low pressure caused a headache and dizziness in the altitude, so we decided it best to recover properly. The guys were pushing on but very tired towards the end. In hindsight I would say we wouldve done better spending more of the bad days resting to save a bit more energy for the last good days, but thats how it is: you can never know your limit before you reach it. Overall were all very hyped to get to final training in Finland before the racing season, and Im sure everyone is as eager as I am to finally get racing again after a 7 month long training period.
