Review of Play - For Lovers of Performing Arts Ek Mulaquat The other day on Sunday evening , 21st Sept we went to see the play ‘Ek Mulaqat’ in Mumbai at Rangsharda theater at Bandra Shekhar Suman is seen with the extremely talented actress Deepti Naval in this play titled Ek Mulaqat, where he plays the celebrated Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi and she, his lover Amrita Pritam. The story, set against a cold winter night, starts with Amrita sitting on the terrace of her house in Delhi. Amrita Pritam gets a trunk call from Mumbai, but wonders who is calling her as she does not know anyone in that city, except Sahir Ludhianvi. But, suddenly, Sahir appears in front of her after a pretty long time at the fag end of their life when they parted from each other from their younger days and there is a soul sharing conversation between the two poets, who were lovers. The play is a musical presentation which captures their unrequited love and their unique relationship full of pathos. Hindi/ Urdu play ‘Ek Mulaqat’ is much talked about these days due to various reasons. Firstly, for the first time ever, the real-life love story of literary geniuses Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam is been revealed in a storytelling medium. ‘Ek Mulaqat’ is also scripted with Ludhianvi’s lyrics and Pritam’s poem.s The play is a beautiful interplay of poetry, prose, emotions and twist and turrn of events woven into the social reality of the day. It shows how a beautiful script can transcend the barrier of languages and times into our own experiences overshadow the deficiency in enactment, diction and direction. The play would have been simpler had the unwarranted infusion in the form of technology and music at places been avoided. Recitation of poetry is bit longish. The director has creatively used the concept of mind space propelled by a very good story and script except the tough Punjabi and urdu dialect difficult to understand the essence as would be required to enjoy the play with full involvement of one’s soul. However ‘Ek Mulaqat’ turns out to be a treat for the lovers of Urdu shayari (poetry) and the hall was unexpectedly houseful to the brink to enjoy this short play.
