Rights and Responsibilities in Learning Agreements One of my trainees brought in a new (for me) approach to setting groundrules or a framework of protocols for a learning agreement in the training room, lecture theatre or classroom. For every “RIGHT” that someone articulates there has to be a corresponding “RESPONSIBILITY” So here’s a sample from the profile of 18 generated by one group. I can send you a fully typed version with the18 R’s and R’s if you wish but would be interested in your comments AND any more R and R’s for the list below. Here’s just four from the eighteen :- “I have the right to have and express my own feelings – and responsibility to own them as mine and not claim they are universal truths “I have the right to be listened to and taken seriously – and responsibility to listen to and take others seriously” “I have the right to set my own priorities, values and limits – and responsibility to make sure these do no harm to you or me.” “ I have the right to be the judge of my own worth – and responsibility to use information from people I value” The 18 Rs and Rs generated debate (sometimes too much and sometimes perversely were breached in the debates!) .You can also use this formula as an ice breaker by cutting the R’s and R’s into cards, allocating just one R to each person so that people come up with their own take on the missing corresponding R.
