Rock n Roll News: Genesis Sum of the Parts Documentary Released on DVD, Blu-ray This Week Genesis career-spanning documentary Sum of the Parts finally was released on DVD and Blu-ray this week after its arrival was pushed back from this past November. The film follows the bands journey from its 1967 formation at the U.K.s Charterhouse school through its development as an inventive prog-rock group led by Peter Gabriel and its emergence as a major pop-rock act fronted by Phil Collins, to the groups 2007 reunion tour and beyond. The documentary also looks at the various Genesis members successful solo careers and side projects, and is highlighted by brand-new interviews with Gabriel, Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Steve Hackett. All five musicians were filmed discussing the groups history together, individually and in various combinations. Speaking recently with ABC News Radio about Sum of the Parts, Rutherford said he thinks the film tells a nice story, noting, Its the variety of the songwriting. When you hear what came out of this school band…[its] quite a special historical thing now. One of the most dramatic periods in the groups history involved Gabriels 1975 departure and the bands decision to move forward with drummer Collins stepping into the frontman role. Rutherford says he thinks that the transition worked out relatively smoothly because the audience wanted it to work. Phil was in-house. They knew Phil. It wasnt a new person coming in. Thats the difference. As for Collins development as a prolific writer of pop hits, Rutherford says that was completely unexpected. He didnt sort of start writing per se as chords and melodies, you know, until a little later on, Mike points out. Who wouldve thought, really? Rutherford adds that another unique aspect of the Genesis story is how the band was able to balance working together with the members solo projects. We ran the solo careers alongside the band careers happily for a long time, he notes. I think they actually helped each other. Of course, Collins and Rutherford, with his group Mike + the Mechanics, both experienced chart-topping successes during the 1980s. (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1) Sum of All the Parts also contains rare performance footage, TV appearances and behind-the-scenes clips. In addition, the film includes interviews with founding Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips and longtime touring members Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson. The DVD and Blu-ray also offer extended interview footage with the bands core members. youtube/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=z8YlndCEOi4
