Rocky update: Rocky was a tomcat I found who had fathered an entire colony of cats, ornery as the dickens and stole my heart just the same. Brought him inside almost a year ago in October, neutered him and found him positive for FIV. After a couple months I had bloodwork done after some weight loss to discover he was diabetic. Recently I made the decision to put him under care with a wonderful couple that were giving a dog insulin shots and he fit into their schedule more easily than mine, They have done a much better job at monitoring his BG level as I was too much of a wreck trying to get blood from his ear to test. His appetite has been good, but hes had other issues. He just had his 2nd visit to the vet within a couple of weeks and got a 2nd Convenia shot (antibotics+vitamins). He was exhibiting some type of sores on his skin that you will see in the pic below. In addition to poor overall coat condition, the vet found him to be 15-16 years of age, had wicked ear mites and very bad teeth (both commonly found as side effects of having FIV). If the Convenia shot the 2nd time round wont do the job, he may need to go on Baytril, which will be no small task for this feisty guy. He has a significant heart murmur and an irregular heartbeat as well. I have been sending money every month for his expensive food, paying for vet bills and it is time to order insulin again. He is hanging in there, tough old bird! My dear friend Laraine has been wonderful in helping get to the bottom of what is going on with him. The latest: Hes a resilient old guy. Doc G was shaking his head in amazement. Hes really quite a mess. Needs a good bath to remove dead fur and condition his skin. He has sores all over, tho they have improved. Hes so compromised Julie. Hes fine where he is but between the diabetes, skin and his teeth and heart and FIV I dont know how hes managing. A bath would be good. I will see about getting him bathed soon, at least to give him some comfort. This has me on the verge of tears, I just love him so much.
