Rooney: Miss wont affect RvP Wayne Rooney says Robin van Persie’s second-half penalty miss against Real Sociedad won’t affect the Dutchman’s confidence in front of goal, and Uniteds no.10 is disappointed but not overly concerned about the impact of missing out on another three points in Group A. Van Persie came off the bench after 63 minutes in a double substitution along with Ashley Young, replacing Rooney and Javier Hernandez, and it looked as though the personnel change might sway the game in United’s favour. Within six minutes of his arrival on the pitch, van Persie had hit a post and fired a shot narrowly wide, then United were awarded a penalty after Young went down under a challenge from Markel Bergara. Van Persie confidently stepped up to take the spot-kick but his shot rebounded off the post. “Of course [everyone misses from time to time],” Rooney told PA Sport. “Most forwards in the world miss penalties and that wont affect him, Im sure. “Were disappointed we didnt get the three points as we had the best chances. Overall, though, we can see the positives. We got a clean sheet and were still top of the group. I think coming away from home in the Champions League is always difficult. But we created the better chances and I feel we should have won the game. A draw wasnt the worst result for us, though, particuarly given the other game finished 0-0 as well. But were disappointed we didnt get the three points.”
