Roy was out in Independence yesterday, hovering over family and friends as they bid farewell to a true hero, Richard Dean Dixon. The sky was blue and a steady southwest wind whipped the great leaves of the sycamore trees. After a farewell hymn was sung, two soldiers proudly presented a flag to Marietta, Richard’s wife of 57 years. Yes, Richard Dean Dixon was a hero; the hero of a little white house on 16th Terrace. He was a family man who used humor and colorful stories to hand down wisdom to his five children and their playmates. Richard was also a Korean War veteran who worked for 25 years in the U.S. Postal Service. But being a terrific father and husband was his true pride and joy. He blazed a good trail for our wagons to follow.
