Royal Gibraltar Field Gun Crew Update: As at 30th April 14 Three weeks into training I thought I would give the you a quick overview of our Field Gun training. Soldiers from 22 and 26 Engineer Regiment are currently conducting daily training in Gibraltar, part of a 7 week pre competition training plan. A typical day begins with strength training in Devil Towers Camp (DTC) Gymnasium at 0700. From 0830 till 1100 we are centrally employed within the Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RGR), with half of us working alongside the EOD team situated within the airfield, and the other half working within DTC Gymnasium. From 1100 hours the team transits down to Gunwharf Quay where Gibraltar HQ is located, along with the Field Gun track. 1200 till 1400 the team conducts track sessions with CSM K Alveries or Number 1 as he is called on the track. This involves rehearsals of the Field Gun race. With the gun weighing around the same as a small car these sessions, with the now increasingly warmer weather in Gibraltar can be very physical. We conduct various drills so the whole 18 man crew works as one to become the quickest on the event day. After training we have a team physio who takes a cool down and administers any injuries incurred during the sessions. We then return to DTC to conduct any remaining centrally employed jobs and personal PT sessions. On Saturday the 10th May the gun crew will be involved in the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay around Gibraltar. The crew will take a leg, carrying the baton and conduct a full Field Gun run through in Castemates Square, in the heart of Gibraltar’s town. In addition to training we have been approached by the WOs & Sgts Mess to build an outdoor cooking area including a barbecue and serving area. LCpl Hester and LCpl Bent have produced a materials and cost estimate for the mess to discuss if they wish to proceed or not. Attached are a couple of photos from training, more to follow with the crew in uniform. LCpl Hester 9 Tp 52AES
