Rudra Singha ( reign 1696 - 1714 ) - Assamese king who envisioned a pan Hindu alliance to counter the Mughal empire . Born with the Ahom name Sukhrungpha , he adopted the Sanskrit name Rudra Singha on coronation . Rudra Singha came to power in 1696 in Assam . He built up alliances across the North East , starting with Khyrim ( Meghalaya ) and Tripura . This was infact first time that the Ahoms and Tripura had agreed to a military alliance . He also annexed the Kachar and Jantia kingdoms , bringing the areas bordering Mughal India under his direct control . Around 1714 Rudra Singha embarked on an ambitious project of uniting al l the Hindu kings of Eastern India against the Mughal empire .Envoys were sent to the Rajas of Koch Behar , Morung , Nadiya , Rangpur and zamindars of Burdwan and Barnagar (both in Bengal ) . Rudra Singha , through his envoys , urged these kings to grasp the need of concentrated action to save Hindu religion from the Mughals . All the kings and zamindars rallied to his cause .. and an army of 4,00,000 amassed at Guwahati , ready to strike at a tottering empire .Unfortunately , at this critical juncture , Rudra Singha died at Guwahati , and his grand alliance died with him . But the idea of a Pan Hindu union conceived by a king in the far north eastern corner was something unprecedented .
