SAM SAYS A Synopsis of the Sunday School/Bible Study Lesson for Sunday September 1, 2013 New Horizon Church of Faith Hi! We are reaching out again to all those interested in finding strength and growing in the Lord by taking in some Bible study tips. We found that this weeks’ lesson set us in awe of the Father. Join us at Psalm 104 found in the center portion of your Bible. Johann G. Herder, a German philosopher, theologian and poet, stated that studying the Hebrew language for ten years is worth reading this single psalm in its original form. Psalm 104 is a lyrical hymn with no known author or time or place of composition. It is a powerfully written expression of the psalmist thoughts about God’s creation and care of the world and all things therein. In summarizing Genesis 1, it describes the powers of our Creator God. It reminds us that all living things depend on God for sustenance. Birth, life and death are under the complete control of God. Amen!? Before concluding the lesson it is worth noting that the writer of this beautiful Psalm might have had two sources: Genesis 1 (ca. 540 BCE) and the Great Hymn to the Aten (ca. 1350 BCE). The author of the familiar former is unknown but the authorship of the latter is attributable to the maverick Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten. Reading three available excerpts from the latter and familiarity with the Six-Day creation narrative confirms the possible connection, and it is left for further research and investigation the African influence on Judaism or vice versa. We hope you got something good out of our discussion of Psalm 104. Again, we pray you will contact us with any comments, questions of prayer request. Use any name you like. Do bless us with any of your concerns. May the Lord watch between me and thee until next week.
