SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN-Sunday, March 30, 2014 Pecos, meanwhile, continued to do what it does best — win state titles. The Panthers took their third in a row in AA cheer and have established themselves as the premier cheer program in the class. Pecos head coach Jessica Flores , who is in her fifth year of the program, has seen her team exploded in terms of participation over that time. She was especially emotional about seven seniors who started with her in 2009 and became the foundation of the program. “I love what I do, and I love them,” Flores said. “I started with these girls since the eighth grade, and I am losing seven of them, and I love them. I am so proud.” One of the newcomers, though, is no stranger to winning. Cassandra CdeBaca, who won an individual cross-country title in 2012, came out for cheer this year. She is the classic example of the multi-sport athletes who permeate the school. Many of the cheerleaders also competed in volleyball, cross-country and basketball. Some are currently competing in softball and track and field in the spring. CdeBaca has competed in every sport including softball this year, and it takes a lot of communication and some sacrifices. “All of our coaches work together,” CdeBaca said. “I haven’t made it to track yet because my dedication is on cheer. After this, we got [track], but this was for a championship.”
