SHADOW DANCING BALI-STYLE It has been a roller coaster for the past few days in Bali, everyone was feeling it here, like an infectious festival-buzz that eventually took us all over in anticipation of the New Year, and we took it to the streets on the twilight and eve of Nyepi... In every village, the young men paraded their 10-20 ft effigies of who-knows-what?--gnarly creatures with very ugly bits from the fantasy recesses of the Balinese adolescent mind. We all proceeded to the major crossroad of the community, in a ritual gesture to drive out the darkness... sacred ceremonial dancing alongside dancing 20 ft. human caricatures, all to initiate a new Shadow cycle, another year of dancing between the light and the dark. The dark, the light, no difference.
