SOAS FORUM Serene Wee Non-party Cabinet Minister Idris Jala is just the tip of the liberal intelligentsia iceberg who can enrich the culture just by exercising their conscience more, in most countries. Its the inversion of the reign of white terror to the rising of the white positive power of the powerful middle class liberal intelligentsia who have largely remain dormant. Good to see fellow Oxonian, Sgs fugitive, Tan Wah Piow bringing out his memoirs and marketing them in Malaysia. No doubt his broad sweep observations of the Sg scene are most helpful for both practitioners and academics. Sg veterans like him - in an out of Sg - of course have much to do. Unlike his time when overt repression was common, things could be worse now. The greater use of Orwellian tactics via the covert secret police straight out of the classic 1984 Orwells novel seems accepted by the sg oppo an alternative people. In the 1980s while he and his group was nipped in the bud by ISA arrests , designed to prevent alternative talents from being developed in Sg, these days self imposed opposition restrictions, stifle the development of oppo talents and any form of excellence.
