SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST Philippians 1:19 (MSG) because I know how its going to turn out. Through your faithful prayers and the generous response of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, everything he wants to do in and through me will be done. (GW) for another reason. I know that I will be set free through your prayers and through the help that comes from the Spirit of Jesus Christ. (NKJV) For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, (TLB) I am going to keep on being glad, for I know that as you pray for me, and as the Holy Spirit helps me, this is all going to turn out for my good. Pneuma is translated-Spirit, (Holy) Ghost, Spirit (of God), Spirit (of the Lord), (My) Spirit, Spirit (of truth), Spirit (of Christ), human (spirit), (evil) spirit, spirit (general), spirit, (Jesus’ own) spirit, (Jesus’ own) ghost, Most of the times it is spoken of : 1) the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son a) sometimes referred to in a way which emphasises his personality and character (the Holy Spirit) b) sometimes referred to in a way which emphasises his work and power (the Spirit of Truth) c) never referred to as a depersonalised force 2) the spirit, i.e. the vital principal by which the body is animated a) the rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides b) the soul 3) a spirit, i.e. a simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding, and acting a) a life giving spirit b) a human soul that has left the body c) a spirit higher than man but lower than God, i.e. an angel 1) used of demons, or evil spirits, who were conceived as inhabiting the bodies of men 2) the spiritual nature of Christ, higher than the highest angels and equal to God, the divine nature of Christ 3) the disposition or influence which fills and governs the soul of any one a) the efficient source of any power, affection, emotion, desire, etc. b) a movement of air (a gentle blast) , of the wind, hence the wind itself c) breath of nostrils or mouth The word pneuma, which we translate supply, signifies also furnishing whatever is necessary. The Spirit of God he expected to help all his infirmities, and to furnish him with all the wisdom, prudence, strength of reason, and argument, which might be necessary for him in the different trials he had to pass through with his persecutors, and the civil powers, at whose judgment-seat he stood. The revelation in the Bible concerning God, Christ, and the Spirit is progressive. The Spirit is mentioned first as the Spirit of God, in relation to creation. Then, He is mentioned as the Spirit of Jehovah, in the context of Gods relationship with man; as the Holy Spirit, in relation to the conception and birth of Christ; as the Spirit of Jesus, in relation to the Lords human living; as the Spirit of Christ, in relation to the Lords resurrection; and here as the Spirit of Jesus Christ. The Spirit of Jesus Christ is the Spirit mentioned in John 7:39. This is not merely the Spirit of God before the Lords incarnation but the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit with divinity, after the Lords resurrection, compounded with the Lords incarnation (humanity), human living under the cross, crucifixion, and resurrection. The holy anointing ointment in Exodus 30:23-25, a compound of olive oil and four kinds of spices, is a full type of this compound Spirit of God, who is now the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Here it is not the Spirit of Jesus or the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9) but the Spirit of Jesus Christ. The Spirit of Jesus is related mainly to the Lords humanity and human living; the Spirit of Christ is related mainly to the Lords resurrection. To experience the Lords humanity, as illustrated in 2:5-8, we need the Spirit of Jesus. To experience the power of the Lords resurrection, as mentioned in 3:10, we need the Spirit of Christ. In his suffering the apostle experienced both the Lords suffering in His humanity and the Lords resurrection. Hence, the Spirit to him was the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the compound, all-inclusive, life-giving Spirit of the Triune God. Such a Spirit has, and even is, the bountiful supply for a person like the apostle, who was experiencing and enjoying Christ in His human living and resurrection. Eventually, this compound Spirit of Jesus Christ becomes the seven Spirits of God, who are the seven lamps of fire before Gods throne to carry out His administration on earth for the accomplishing of His economy concerning the church, and who are the seven eyes of the Lamb for the transfusing of all that He is into the church. All this envy and opposition will tend to promote his salvation. He will be delivered by God who will hear their prayers, and who will strengthen and direct him by the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Either the supply furnished by the Spirit, or the supply which is the Spirit. It is better to take it as including both. The exact phrase, Spirit of Jesus Christ, is found only here. Spirit of Christ occurs Romans 8:9; 1Peter1:11. The Holy Spirit is meant; called the Spirit of Jesus Christ, because through the Spirit Christ communicates Himself to His people. “The Spirit is the living principle and the organ of the proper presence of Christ and of His life in them”. To sustain me, and to cause those happy results to come out of these trials, He needed the same spirit which Jesus Christ had, to enable Him to bear his trials with patience, and to impart to him the consolations which he required. He had no idea that these trials would produce these effects of their own accord, nor that it could be by any strength of his own. The supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ; which he had reason to expect and hope would be given him through their prayers for him; for though God has made large provisions for the supply of the wants of his people, in his Son and in his covenant, to be dispensed unto them by his Spirit, yet for these will he be sought unto by them: the supply of the Spirit is a supply of gifts from Christ, fitting and qualifying men for his service, and which are ministered by the Spirit to them severally as he will; and a supply of grace out of the fulness of Christ, which the Spirit of grace is the applier of; and a supply of strength from the same by him, to enable the saints both to do and suffer whatever he is pleased to call, them to; it is in short a supply of all their need, which the Spirit of God helps them to, according to the riches of grace, in glory by Christ: this the apostle knew would be sufficient for him, to support him under his present troubles, to deliver him out of them, and to fit him for whatever future work and service his Lord and master had for him to do. 7 SCRIPTURE REFERENCES Genesis 1:2; Exodus 30:23-25, Judges 3:10; 1 Samuel 10:6; Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:35; Acts 16:7; Romans 8:9; Galatians4:6; Philippians 1:19; 1Peter 1:11; Revelation 1:4; 4:5; 5:6
