Soon after Geelani addressed the rally, a group of youth pelted stones on a police vehicle, triggering clashes. Police burst several tear-gas canisters to disperse the group. In the clashes, the front windscreen of Geelani’s vehicle was also damaged. “I strongly condemn the stone-pelting incident in the market. Those who resorted to stone-pelting without any justification cannot be freedom-lovers. The unruly group was associated with either police, Army or intelligence agencies to foil our peaceful rally,” he said. Geelani said when he addressed a rally in Sopore in November 2011, “army attempted to attack me.” “Some youth had spotted an army soldier with a pistol. He was handed over to police but we know he must have been one of their favorites,” he added.
