ST. JOACHIM and ST. ANNE Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saints of the Day - July 26 According to Traditions, St. Anne was born in Bethlehem, and got married to Joachim of Nazareth, making both of them descendants of David. The Protoevangelium of St. James described Joachim as a rich and pious man, who regularly gave to the poor and the Synagogue. Joachim and Anne first lived in Galilee but later settled in Jerusalem. Because both were sterile, Joachims sacrifices were rejected by the High Priest since being barren was interpreted as a sign of divine displeasure. Joachim then withdrew to the desert where he fasted and prayed. On the 40th day, an angel appeared to him and promised a child who will be destined for great things. The couple rejoiced at the birth of a daughter they named Mary. When the child was 3 years old, Joachim and Anne presented her to the temple in Jerusalem. The feasts of Sts. Joachim and Anne were celebrated separately from the 1st century until it was fixed on July 26 in 1969. Photos: 1) Sts.
