STATE OF THE ART: The reason why there is still a lot of racism in Hollywood stems partly from established attitudes (the Pascal/Rudin e-mails) but mostly fear of failing at the foreign box office. This is why you still have less black male and female lead actors in films and on TV. After all, Kerry Washington was the first black actress in more than a couple of decades to be the lead of a network series when she got Scandal. And if you think racism is simply bad for black actors, then it is ten or twenty times worse for Latino and Asian actors. As a film critic covering the Hawaii Film Festival over the years, I often spoke privately with Asian actors who expressed some of the BS they had to put up with in auditions and to get parts. And even comedian Chris Rock recently lashed out at Hollywood for discriminating against Latino actors and performers. Sad to say, the reason The George Lopez Show managed to get made and ran on ABC is because film star Sandra Bullock was impressed with Lopez and thought he should have his own show. There hadnt been a Hispanic sitcom on the networks since Chico and the Man in the 70s. So much for color blind casting in Hollywood.
