STATEMENT BY VOLTA YOUTH NETWORK ON THE DEATH OF PROF. KOFI AWOONOR The Volta Youth Network (VYN) have learnt with shock and dismay, the death of Prof. Kofi Awoonor resulting from injuries sustained during an attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi on Saturday. We extends our sincere condolences to the family of Prof. Kofi Awoonor, his friends, love ones, the NDC party which he was an ardent member, the President and anyone affected by this tragic loss. Indeed the death of Prof. Awoonor, a distinguished Poet, Teacher, Diplomat and Politician who has positively impacted his society and touch many lives can only be taken with a heavy heart. In this dark hour of their loss, we sincerely pray for the Lord to grant his family and love ones the fortitude to cope with the grief in the believe that Prof. Awoonor will find rest in the Lord. We understand Prof. Awoonor’s son, who also sustained injuries in the attack has survived and is currently responding to treatment. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets well soon. CALL FOR ACTION ON TERROR Meanwhile, we wish to state emphatically that, the sadistic manner in which Prof. Awoonor died is a testament to the fact that, terrorism know no boundaries and no individuals or nations are above the reach of terror. It is our position that, the Government of Ghana from this day on, proactively assume a leadership role internally and externally to engage with regional bodies like ECOWAS and continental bodies like the African Union (AU) to consider reviewing the security architecture of these bodies to properly outline how to engage and fight terror on the continent. The threat by Boko Haram in Nigeria and Tureg Rebels in Mali should be enough work up call to us as a nation that we are not safe and the time to collectively act to defeat terror is now. Thanks.
