STATEMENT ON THE DETENTION OF A MALAYSIAN COUPLE IN SWEDEN The Ministry of Foreign Affairs views with serious concern the detention of a Malaysian couple from the office of Tourism Malaysia Stockholm by the Swedish authorities. The continuing detention under remand of the accused Malaysian couple has caused a lot of anxiety amongst the Malaysian public especially with the case being prolonged even until today. The extension of fourteen days on the remand of the couple was made by the prosecution in order for the prosecutor to have more time for further investigation. Since the first day of the arrest, the Ministry through the Embassy of Malaysia in Stockholm has been fully involved in providing assistance to the accused couple in many different ways. Through the diplomatic channel, the Ministry has issued the Diplomatic Notes from the Government of Malaysia to the Government of Sweden on several occasions in seeking the latter’s kind attention and good judgment. Official representations were made by the Ambassador of Malaysia to Sweden to the highest level of relevant authorities. We are also in the midst of securing necessary approval for the temporary custody of the couple’s four (4) children to be moved from appointed local foster parents to Muslim Malaysian families living in Sweden. Sweden as a country upholds strong views towards human rights and children protection. The Swedish laws have been in placed as such, for their local citizens as well as expatriates residing in Sweden to abide by. This, however, would not diminish the on-going efforts undertaken by the Ministry in promoting the rights and protection, welfare and safety of all Malaysians involved. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would mobilize the available means in order for the case to be resolved smoothly in the near future and for the rights of the couple as well as their children to always be safeguarded.
