STREET UPDATE: Please see memorandum from Sam Goade with road conditions update as of 9:30 a.m. Sunday, February 2, 2014. We began pretreating our list of roadways in our pretreatment program starting at 5:00 a.m. this morning using a 50/50 mix of salt/grit. We treated the road salt with beet juice before mixing in the grit. We are using our normal dosage of liquid chloride that is sprayed onto the grit/salt mixture as it is distributed out the back of the spreader onto the roadway. We are finishing up our pretreatment program as of the time of this email. We are currently getting some light snow but heavier snow is coming our way as shown on our weather radar. Our three (3) spreader trucks will now start hitting some more streets that have historically caused trouble when we have freezing precipitation. When snow accumulations reach an amount where we can start plowing (typically 2-3 inches), we will deploy our three (3) snow plows to the roadways that have been pretreated earlier today. After plowing those 160 lane miles of roadway we will continue to work on other streets of concern prioritizing those with hills, steep curves and higher traffic volumes. We used 84 gallons of our 500 gallons of beet juice to treat our road salt that was placed on the roadways this morning. I have ordered another 1000 gallons of beet juice but will conserve what we have left in storage for the two additional weather events predicted for the remainder of this week. We have also ordered another 1000 gallons of liquid chloride. So far we have used approximately 20 tons of salt during this pretreatment event. While out pretreating our roads this morning I noticed what appears to be some liquid pretreatment on some of the State Highways that run through Springdale. Just a reminder, Thompson (hwy 71b), Sunset (hwy 412), Robinson (hwy 412) Old Missouri Road (Hwy 265) and Hwy 264 that run through the City of Springdale will be maintained by the Arkansas State Highway Department. However, in the event that we have a very significant snow fall and the Highway Department is delayed plowing these roads, we will get our plows on them as needed. I will continue to keep you posted with the changing roadway conditions as the event unwinds throughout the day.
