STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT (UNIBEN) Odina Olaniyi > STUDENTS UNION GOVERNMENT (UNIBEN) NIGERIA AND INTERNATIONAL POLITICS Since severing the cord of colonialism with Britain in 1960, Nigeria has played dominant roles in keeping peace in the global village. On the African continent Nigerian Army has fought hard to keep peace in Zaire (now Congo), Liberia, sierra- lone, Sudan (Darfur Province) and recently Nigeria contributed the largest strength to the UN mission in Mali. Also outside the African continent Nigeria’s military has distinguished itself in countries like Lebanon, Yugoslavia (now Slovenia and Croatia) etc. Nigeria has also contributed generously to troubled African nations. Famous amongst such financial contributions is the 20 million US dollars donated by Murtala Mohammed’s government to Namibia. Nigeria also played big brother role during the struggle against the evil of white minority rule in southern African countries like Zimbabwe and Republic of South Africa. Keeping these contributions in view it will not be unreasonable if Nigeria demands greater participation and increased respect amongst the committee of nation. If truly respect is earned as a nation Nigeria should have earned its respect. Nigeria has been sidelined in international politics because her leaders are bad students of history, if they had followed the Nigerian civil war history properly the actions and inactions of America and her allies almost brought an end to the Federal Republic of Nigeria as its known today, the western bloc made it clear that they are enemies of one Nigeria during the civil war. When the issue Bakassi peninsula came up, again the western bloc showed themselves to be enemies of the Nigerian nation, by aligning with Cameroun to steal Nigeria’s God given land. It’s of common knowledge to all that America and her allies has been predicting the splitting of Nigeria a long while ago, it’s crystal clear that, these people are enemies of the Nigerian state and the best thing to be done is for the Nigerian nation to look for new friends amongst the committee of nations. At this juncture it’s pertinent to mention that the eastern bloc headed by the Russian and China stood by the federation during the trying period of Nigerian civil war, the eastern bloc supported Nigeria during the struggle for the oil rich Bakassi Peninsula; Russia and the eastern bloc supported the stance of Nigeria against the evil of white minority rule in southern Africa, the eastern bloc over the years has stood against the American prediction that Nigeria is doomed to spitted into many countries. It’s crystal clear to observers of international politics that America and the western bloc are still using the system of divide and conquer which they used to enslave Africa and African over 200 years ago. Their support for the Arab spring that ousted the likes of Gaddaffi of Libya, Mubarak of Egypt and Ben Ali of Tunisia which has made peace elude those nations since then has further reinforced the claim of that school of thought. The interest of America and the western bloc is to cause wars and use that avenue to exploit their victim nations of the most treasured booty of such conflicts which is natural resources. The heart of this article is to encourage the federal government led by President Goodluck Jonathan on the onward march in the alignment between Nigeria and the eastern bloc. The high powered delegation visit to china, which is a response to President Obama’s refusal to visit Nigeria on his last two visits to Africa, is a right step in the right direction. The most hilarious part of the state visit to China is CNN’s refusal to broadcast the visit which they saw as an affront on American interests in Nigeria. The President should be encouraged in his request to withdraw Nigerian army from the senseless American sponsored war in Mali and other UN backed operations where Nigerian army will do the work and foreign powers will take the glory. The best time to break away from forces of oppression and enemies of our federation was when they left us in the cold during the civil war the second best is now. the bond between Nigeria and the eastern bloc must be tightened for the upward growth of the federal republic of Nigeria. by Olaniyi Jerry ODINA CHIEF-WHIP SUPREME SUG PARLIAMENT 2011/2012
