STUDENTS’ UNION OF CHANCELLOR COLLEGE TO : ALL STUDENTS FROM : OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER DATE : 6TH JUNE, 2013 RE : COUINCIL RESOLUTION The matter as above-captioned refers. The communiqué serves to inform all the members of Chirunga intelligentsia that Council of the University of Malawi met and decided on the following That Chancellor college as well as polytechnic reopen on the 17th of June, 2013 on the same conditions as before That each and every student will be invited back to college individually That each student will be required to complete a consent form without which will not get the monthly upkeep allowance/ get registered. Interpretation of the communiqué from council. That coming back to college will mean that we accept going back to class under the same conditions we were complaining about. That when you are on the campus you will be required to sign a consent form depending on whether you agree or not with the conditions on the form. That council has surpassed SUCC executive to reach to the students individually. That, council does not care whether the students are learning in whatever conditions that may there be. Even if it means attending classes with hollow and echoing stomachs, and paying exorbitant and ridiculous school fees, council does not mind. That council cannot stand on what it believes on, because previously they believed and acknowledged that we were advancing valid demands. Now with the position it has taken that we should stop pursuing unattainable goals, SUCC is made to believe that council is working towards other directions rather than to the good of the students. SUCC Executive observes That this is sheer perpetuation and prolongation of divide and rule ploy and gambit that has been experienced ever since it’s U-turn. That coming back to school is not limited to those who only wish to get back to class in a draconian fashion but even those who want to reaffirm their stand on the “war of principle” that we embarked on. Thus, this may mean an opportunity in disguise for the loyalists and comrades in this battle to converge and restrategize over. By coming up with letters and forms that students must complete and consent to, SUCC observes that council seem to bypass, supplant and suppress the spirit of unionism that has thus far been manifested in the Chirunga literati. That the emphasis on individuals by council is unfortunate because when individuality is given a priority in an institution like ours, unity is always compromised. And where discord is preached high, disarry pandemonium and general crumbling of development follows. That according to the press release by the university council, signing the forms is not a condition of going back to class rather a condition to receiving your monthly upkeep allowances. That the press release in direct quotation says that, only those that will register after paying their tuition fees will be allowed to proceed with their studies as was the case before the colleges closed. However, as far as SUCC is concerned and according to the students handbook, registration happens in within the first week or two at the beginning of each semester and that all of us except a few due to personal reasons are already registered SUCC executive suggest that The choices and decisions that should be made on the above mentioned issues cannot be made by the executive alone without a true reflection of what the community takes of this. Such that the That the decisions and choices should be made by the whole community. This is in line with the already stated point that college will write to each student individually inviting them back to college. “HAVE WE REALLY CROSSED THE RUBICON RIVER TOGETHER” Yours Sincerely, CHARLES NKHALAMBA FOR SUCC EXECUTIVE
