SUE’S REVIEWS: LET’S BE COPS “Let’s Be Cops” is a 104 minute R Rated Comedy/Action directed by Luke Greenfield starring Jake Johnson (Ryan), Damon Wayans, Jr. (Justin), Rob Riggle (Officer Segars), Nina Dobrev (Josie) and Andy Garcia (Brolin). Ryan and Justin are good friends who have tried to make an honest living but have fallen on hard times. Ryan was a stand-out college football player whose career was cut short by a dumb dare devil move. Justin is trying to make it big by writing video games (including one called “Patrolman”) but he just cannot get a break. They decide to dress up as cops for a “costume” party and end up impressing hot gals and neighborhood citizens who really believe they are police officers. Ryan and Justin continue the deception which includes fooling real policeman as well. Their situation drastically changes, however, when these so-called heroes inadvertently become involved with a brutal organized crime ring that also involves dirty cops. They decide to make a stand and fight even if it means risking their lives. There is much to dislike about this movie. The script is corny and the dialogue is silly and crass with many homophobic and racial references. (Why is it that only Hollywood can get away with politically incorrect or racially insensitive jokes?). And the majority of the jokes are just not funny. The movie’s theme of impersonating cops has lines such as “I don’t want to look like cops- I just want to shoot them” which make me uncomfortable, especially in light of what is going on in our society. There is more depiction, glorification and parody of gun violence in this movie than in most I have seen this year (but most are very bad shots which do not cause much bloodshed until the very end). The profanity and crassness are never excessive and the funniest scene involves an out-of-control 300- plus pound naked man which reminded me of the famous scene in “Borat” (2006). Overall, “Let’s Be Cops” is good-natured and never mean-spitted. Although I did not like the first 84 minutes but I enjoyed the last 20. There is an interesting twist at the end (which I eventually got) and the dialogue and actions become more clever and funny. The main characters show true bravery and emotions and the conclusion demonstrates respect for the cops or “Brothers in Blue”. I think the target audience (you know who you are) will like this movie but the rest should stay home. I give “Let’s Be Cops” a 3.5 on the ABBONDANZOMETER (Scale of 1-10).
