Sam Lloyd writes: Ive no right to be happy for myself. As a black man in America, Im to be humbled by my own accomplishment and thankful that Im allowed to have any. I may not brag. I may not even momentarily feel joy that isnt approved. I may not raise my voice. I may not move quickly. See, when I do, I invoke fear and hatred. They tell me to dance, and damnit! --Id better dance well, BUT I may not feel anything but gratitude that I was even given permission to perform. Flowers at my feet and whips across my back. Get up, black boy! ...and dance again! Im not speaking just solely. Im speaking on behalf of many black men, dead and alive. My personal experiences pale in comparison to others. Im well-spoken, and from a proper pedigree, but Ive not for one second EVER been unaware that Im just palatable, praised for the mind of me, negatively judged for the skin of me.
