Saturday is my mothers birthday. She would have been 80 this year. I was looking through the book of poems, stories, etc. I had written for her as a Christmas present the year she passed away. I came across a story about our family tree. I had written this after her death and wanted to share it with you. My mother was the strength that bonded us as a family and I believe she inherited that strength, as we all did from our family tree. Our Family Tree Shes a sight to behold. Her branches span outward and upwards. Her roots run very deep. Every leaf, every limb, are connected to this one tree. When she loses one of her leaves, they do not just wither and die. Instead, they are absorbed into its soil, where they nourish its roots and the leaves remaining. It has cradled many a nest built amongst its branches. When the chicks leave their nest, it patiently awaits their return. Awaiting the day when they too will build their nest amongst its branches. For there is always a special place, just for them. She has weathered many a storm, but she remains strong.She has seen seasons come and go, her leaves forever changing. She can not be torn apart, for obstacles only make her stronger. If you listen closely you can hear voices and laughter amongst its branches, from generations past. Every memory, every story, thats been told through the years, are stored within her fold. She has seen so much over the years. At times her branches have drooped with the weight of sadness and lost.Yet, they have never broken. She happily awaits each new season, each new generation.She awaits them ready to protect them within her branches. She gently rocks each new baby as they find their spot amongst her branches. She welcomes them into the family with gifts of knowledge, heritage, and strength. I am so blessed to be a part of this family tree, to be counted amongst its branches. For she is a mighty tree, a beautiful tree, a tree grown from love. She is my family tree.
